Chapter Twelve

“Dallas,” she said.

During the relaxation exercise, Angelica hadn’t been hypnotized. Spence’s voice soothed her, and he seemed to know all the right questions to prod her memory, but she hadn’t succumbed to any kind of hocus-pocus spell. Conscious and aware of what she was saying, she’d been able to go deep and mine the memories from hidden corners of her brain. And she’d hit gold.

“It worked,” Spence said.

“In a way,” she conceded. “I remembered a bit more.”

“You really hate to admit that I might be right.”

He swooped, lifted her from the chaise and carried her to the bed. His caveman habit of picking her up was irritating but also sexy. In a primitive part of her psyche, she enjoyed his ability to dominate her with his greater size and strength. Never would she admit to such an old-fashioned attitude, but there it was.

His mesmerizing blue eyes raked over her face. When he was close like this, she didn’t care about whether or not she could trust him or her dad’s disapproval or the lack of an engagement proposal. He lay beside her. Her everything, he was all she wanted. She grabbed the front of his T-shirt and pulled him close.

“Dallas,” he said. “I knew you had evidence buried in your subconscious. Our hacking threat just got specific.”

With a groan, she ripped her gaze away from his handsome face, flopped back against the pillows and stared at the ceiling. “I suppose we have to deal with this.”

“I need to get reassigned to the case.”

Her lust would have to be put on hold. She was a field agent and needed to direct all her energy into their mission. Didn’t seem fair but she’d have to wait to make love—until after they saved the world.

“We should hurry,” she said. They’d already talked about the possibility of the Office1116 username in the emails pertaining to a date: eleven-sixteen. “The strike might be scheduled for the sixteenth, which is two days from today.”

He tore open the sash on her robe and ripped the terry cloth open. Underneath, she still wore her blue-and-gray-striped nightgown, but that fabric was thin and clingy. When he lowered himself on top of her, she felt every hard ridge of his six-pack abs. His demanding kiss stole her breath away.

“I’ll be back.” He bolted across the room and grabbed his cell phone.

Though still dazed by their intense moment of contact, she managed to speak. “Wait! It’s too late to call anybody on the East Coast.”

“Protocol goes out the window when it comes to nukes.”

With his cell phone at his ear, he left her alone on the king-size bed. Field agent protocol suggested that she make a few calls of her own. But she wasn’t anxious to inform her supervisor that she’d been abducted, given amnesia and discovered a murder victim.

She threw off the covers and retrieved her personal laptop from her luggage. This machine wasn’t powerful enough or well protected enough to dive into the dark web where she could research the codes from the emails: Y75110 and C4ICBM.
